My brother Ben recently lost his beloved companion Peaches. Peaches was more than just a dog; she was a true support system for my brother. Many of you know my brother Ben and know that he is very kindhearted and would give the shirt off his back to someone else. When my brother was young, he was nonverbal until he started attending preschool. He had only a three-word vocabulary up until the age of two. He was in speech therapy in elementary school and has always had a difficult time speaking and starting conversations with others. As an adult, my brother was diagnosed with Autism, and until he has had Peaches, I have never seen him ever come out of his shell and be able to socialize and interact with people as much as Peaches gave him the ability to.
Peaches went hiking with my brother and allowed him the opportunity to communicate and interact with people. Peaches gave my brother his voice and helped him get out of his shell. Peaches gave Ben a level of happiness that I have not ever seen in him before. She always was excited to see him and followed him around. She was inquisitive, playful, and she loved attention. This past week Peaches started vomiting violently. My brother made a vet appointment for her and after an x-ray they determined that she had eaten an object that was blocking the entrance from her stomach to her small intestine.
The treatment consisted of an emergency surgery. My brother dropped her off at the vet hospital on Thursday morning for the surgery. After the surgery she developed complications. She had internal bleeding after the surgery and her blood was not clotting correctly. They determined after the surgery that she required emergency care, and she was transferred to the Emergency Vet. At the emergency hospital they provided her with care to try and heal her and after several platelet transfusions it was determined that her body was still failing and that she had a genetic disorder that prevented her blood from clotting. There was no way to know this information without something like this happening. After more than 36 hours of emergency care, it was known that she would not be able to recover. This loss has been devastating to him as well as the people surrounding him and Peaches.
My brother spent $14,282 on trying to save his dogs life. My brother has worked at Safeway for 17 years as of this year, working his way up from a courtesy clerk to a deli clerk to a checker. My brother is on a fixed income and this financial blow to him is something that is extremely difficult and will be difficult for some time. My brother is hoping to be able to crowdfund some help for his dog’s expenses. We have receipts of all the vet work that was completed. If you can like, share, or donate even a dollar, any little bit helps. It is heartbreaking to see my brother go through this situation and I am hopeful to reduce the financial weight on his shoulders.
