I'm not normally one to ask for this, but I need help getting back on my feet after paying to save my dog Ellie's life.
Ellie came into my world after my last dog Lily died, She's been my best friend for the last 13 years. Ellie and I even have the same birthday. Imagine that. I giggled when I got the papers the day I adopted her. I've got health problems of my own, which have made keeping constant work difficult. But I can always count on Ellie to make me feel better. Having her as an ESA / mental support dog has been an additional blessing in itself.
Thought I'd share a couple of stories about Ellie she's been one of the most personal, yet intelligent dogs I've ever had the pleasure to come in contact with. When I first got her she had been breed as a puppy. Scars, etc. She did not have a good start to her life. We met unintentionally. I was hired to do a job the people who owned Durham rescue. During my lunches I'd go in and share my PB&j with Ellie (her name was Coco then). She was hesitant at first. But not long after did she lay right next to me as if we had been together forever. After losing Lily. I was still in that mind frame of (what now?) The day I finished the job Ellie and I left together. To what I would consider a clean slate for Ellie. I spent every minute with her. In the beginning she had zero training which I thought okay I'm always up for a challenge. She would run away for hours at a time. Thinking to myself well she'll come back. She always did. Never did figure out where she would go. Maybe she was just rolling around in the woods being a dog. Or maybe just sitting there knowing she's finally at peace. Maybe she was trying to run away from me, I don't know. I had never seen an animal do this before till Ellie but she would take mouthfuls of her food and put it underneath her bed under, the pillows of the couch. She'd even put the food inside the pillowcase of the pillow on my bed. It was one of many many things of her personality that reminded me to be patient. She was and still is a great retriever. I won't go into too much detail but she used to bring home numerous things. I will say there are two stories though that were absolutely hysterical in my point opinion. At least that's what everyone thought that I've told the story to up to this point. She once caught a squirrel, I put it in a box. To go get what I needed to bury it. When I came back she had already taken it upon herself to what I always tell people was give it "a proper burial". Except the tail was sticking straight out of the ground. I guess maybe so she knew where it was....
Another time, this was all the time actually. She actually still does this to this day and we still live within view of the Delaware River like we did then. She would tiptoe through the grass after it rained or the morning or evening dew would settle in. She'd pull these enormous nightcrawlers out of the ground with her front teeth without ripping them apart. Carefully setting them down at the doorstep. It was almost as if she was telling me it's time to go throw a line in the water. lol
I am an avid hunter and fisherman. I was out fishing with a friend and Ellie came along as usual. We were having a great time! What a beautiful July morning! Ellie and I had just stepped away for a second to do her business. When I got a bite on my line. My friend started shouting and we ran back to the dock. After landing the fish, Ellie had gotten a hold of the fish, and some how she ended up swallowing a huge fishhook. You know all the years taking her fishing I've never ever had her do such a thing. She usually just gives it a quick sniff. Maybe the bait was just too tempting this time.(or old age is getting the best of her)
I had no choice but to pay for life-saving surgery to save her, but now I'm broke. I don't know what I'll do now, but I know I did the right thing. I'm just looking to make up the cost of the surgery, no more than that. Please help me out if you can!
