Langa Bicycle Hub began during the COVID-19 lockdown, when movement was restricted and many livelihoods were disrupted. At the time, a small group started collecting discarded and broken bicycles from a local dump site in Langa. With limited tools and no formal workspace, they began repairing what they could — salvaging parts, rebuilding frames, and getting bikes back on the road for people who needed a way to move.
What started as an informal effort at the dump gradually became more organized. As more bikes were repaired, the space evolved into a functioning workshop where young people could learn mechanical skills, help with repairs, and contribute to something practical. The focus was simple: recover unused bicycles, make them functional, and put them back into the community where they could be used for commuting, school, and small-scale work.
Today, the Hub continues that same hands-on approach. It remains rooted in reuse, skill-building, and community participation — turning what was once discarded into something useful again.
