On March 10, 1956, my brother Michael J. Otness was born in Choteau, Montana. Some of his happiest memories were from growing up there with family and friends.
Today, on April 6, 2026, I received the heartbreaking news that Mike has passed away.
At this time, we are still waiting for answers. The person who was sharing a home with him said he had been ill for a few days, and it may have been the flu, but the Coroner has not yet made a final determination.
As we began making calls, we quickly learned that the financial burden is more than we can manage alone. Mike’s body was taken to a funeral home under the direction of the Coroner, and we were told he cannot be released to the cremation facility until the funeral home is paid. In addition to that, there are also the cremation costs, and expenses related to his home — including preparing it for sale and emptying it out.
It only took a few hours to realize that we need help.
If you knew Mike, grew up with him, cared about him, or simply feel moved to help during this difficult time, any donation — no matter the amount — would mean so much. If you are unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser would also be deeply appreciated.
Thank you for helping us with Mike's final expenses so he can rest in dignity.
With gratitude,
Sue Otness
