Help buy a car for a newly resettled Afghan family.
The Drechsler and Bonnici-Clemens families have been hosting an extended family of Afghan allies as they get settled in Vermont.
Our Afghan friends are now living in their own home in Montpelier. They have new jobs in Northfield, the children have started school, and the adults have just passed their learner’s permit tests. The next step is helping them get drivers licenses and a car—an absolute necessity in our rural community where winters are long and public transportation is non-existent.
With a multigenerational family of 10, including young children and a newborn, there is no end to the doctor’s appointments, school meetings, English language classes, and everyday errands on their schedules.
We are raising funds toward the purchase and maintenance of a 7-seater car. Any amount you can give will help our Afghan friends become more self-sufficient. They had no say in where the U.S. Committee on Refugees and Immigrants would resettle them, and Vermont’s weather and geography present unique challenges. We feel lucky to have them as neighbors and we thank you for helping us support their new start in New England.
Please know that we are sharing limited biographical information for the safety of friends and family who remain in Afghanistan.
