Hello All,

My name is Meghan and I have been living with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) for 11 years. CRPS is a rare and debilitating chronic pain condition that profoundly impacts daily life. Typically triggered by injury, surgery, or stroke, CRPS causes intense burning pain and physical changes such as swelling and altered skin temperature and texture, often in an arm or leg. For me, I sustained a right knee injury in a sailing accident 11 years ago, the consequences can be life-altering—my pain progression eventually made driving impossible.

After enduring a year of relying on others for transportation, I discovered the Scripps Driving Program at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas, a specialized service designed to assess and accommodate individuals facing physical challenges that affect their driving ability. With a fee of approximately $5,000, the program offers a comprehensive evaluation and adaptive solutions tailored to each driver’s needs.

The cost covers:

  • - Clinical Assessment: Occupational therapists evaluate vision, reaction time, and cognitive function to understand the driver's capabilities.

  • Simulator Evaluation: A computerized driving simulator tests sensory and motor responses under various driving scenarios, providing a safe environment to assess potential difficulties.

  • - On-Road Test: Conducted with a driving rehabilitation specialist in a dual-controlled vehicle, this real-world test confirms readiness and safety for independent driving.

  • - Adaptive Equipment Installation: Specifically, the Electronic Left Foot Accelerator allowing drivers to operate the accelerator with the left foot, compensating for limitations with the right leg.

About the Electronic Left Foot Accelerator

This innovative device duplicates the function of a traditional accelerator pedal but is positioned to the left of the brake pedal, enabling drivers to use their left foot comfortably and effectively. A push-button switch activates the system, transferring acceleration control to the left pedal while the original right pedal becomes inactive, ensuring safety and ease of use.

For individuals living with CRPS or similar conditions, programs like Scripps' offer a pathway back to independence on the road, blending thorough assessment with cutting-edge adaptive technology. Through such programs, individuals can regain autonomy and confidence, transforming the way they navigate their daily lives.
