Rick Beeman is my dad and he has always been the type of dad that shows up. He was the dad that taught us to drive, played ball in the back yard, cheered us on, fixed our car, and has been a constant in the lives of his family.  Dad was diagnosed with hemochromatosis almost a year ago and he now needs people to show up. With this diagnosis comes an overload of iron due to the protein ferritin which tells your body to store this iron.  Too much iron results in liver disease which can be fatal.  Unfortunately, this is exactly the card that my dad was delt. Over the past year his health has declined significantly. He is in need of a liver to continue his life's journey. He is so close to being accepted to the transplant list at Johns Hopkins. Hopefully that decision will be made this coming week. He has a few medical hoops to jump through this week and it should be a sure thing. He was not a fan of fundraising and did not want or expect help from anyone, but a transplant comes with a financial burden. His medical insurance is not ideal and he has already accumulated several thousand dollars in medical bills over the past year.   This does not include fees that will come with transplant surgery.  It will be necessary to travel to and from Baltimore often which will result in many expenses. Some of these expenses will include gas, food, and lodging. Our family has received many prayers and those prayers have not went unanswered. Dad has made it this far and we know that God is good.

This weekend was a whirlwind, but in the absolute best kind of way!! On Friday, October 28th dad was in the process of possibly receiving a donor liver, but shortly before the procedure was set to begin, the final liver inspection determined that the liver was not viable. Standing in my dad's hospital room and seeing the tears stream down his face was almost unbearable.  We knew this was a possibly from the beginning, but you can't prepare yourself for when it actually happens. We told dad that it just wasn't the right donation and that something would work out. We left the hospital that evening feeling pretty sad, but were praying for a miracle. That miracle happened!! Another donor liver was offered late into Friday evening!! Shortly before 12pm Saturday dad was being wheeled into the operating room! All of his kids were there with him! His procedure took many long hours, but the transplant team at Johns Hopkins said that things couldn't have went any better. One of his surgeons said that he has a beautiful new liver! She said that it was a very healthy liver. They were taking him off the vent which doesn't always happen right away,  but dad did so well! At midnight we were finally able to see him and to say that it was rough is an understatement! He had tubes everywhere and he looked so sick.  This morning we went back to see him and he was talking some, but was still pretty out of it. After grabbing a bite to eat with mom, we returned to find out that dad was moving to the critical care unit which is a step down from ICU! It had been less than 12 hours and patients are usually in ICU for at least 24! Not only did he get moved, he walked!!! He walked about the distance of a football field to the other side of the floor! (He later said that he didn't think he would make it, but he didn't want to let us down.) He was sitting up in a chair! His color is getting better! Everything has just fallen into place. Dad was given the ultimate gift and an angel got wings Friday! God is good! Thanks for the continued support and prayers! The power of prayer is what made all of this possible! Dad still has a long road ahead of him and many trips to Johns Hopkins, but he is beyond grateful to be given the gift of life!
