Our hearts are heavy, this is a tough one to write. Our best friend, the sweetest boy Duncan the Dog, is in an impossible spot. Duncan came into our home at the perfect time, made us a family, and has loved us fiercely and unconditionally. We are now reaching to our friends and family to ask for help covering the cost of incoming vet bills for our sweet boy Duncan.
Wednesday, we noticed Duncan was not eating in the way he typically does – which is as fast as possible. He was moving slowly and with difficultly. He certainly was not the peppy spirit he usually is, and it quickly became clear that something was off. After a trip to our regular vet and a full workup, we left optimistic that he was simply feeling down. The vet seemed enthusiastic and hopeful after Duncan showed signs of affection and energy.
We received a call the next day that his red blood cell count was aggressively low, more than half the levels of what it should be. We were urged to take him to the emergency room and receive another full workup. Unfortunately, no answers were found - no poisons, cancer, foreign objects. This makes it almost impossible for treatment. We believe he either has a blood disease causing anemia or possibly he got into my medication. The diagnosis is unclear.
He is currently on steroids and antibiotics while we monitor him. The total cost for his vet and emergency room visit to this point has totaled $1200. He has another follow up visit on Tuesday that will be $400. Right now, all we can do is monitor him, hope he improves. If he does not, he will require blood transfusions that could cost up to $8000. We are taking it day by day and will address that need if and when we come to it.
We certainly want to do all we can to give him the best care. We are optimistic while preparing for the worst case scenario. For now, anything you are able to offer to help cover cost (sharing the campaign, $5, etc) will be greatly appreciated.
