Eric Craig Filcoff passed away peacefully at his home on April 17, 2026 after a courageous fight with appendiceal adenocarcinoma. Bikes were Eric's first love and were a consistent source of adventure, connection, and joy for him throughout his life. All throughout cancer treatment, he found ways to keep riding, allowing him to feel like himself and be in his happy place. He even had the distinction of being the first person our hospice nurse had ever cared for that still rode a bike (or, as he would correct - a trike).
Towards the end of his life, he reflected on a meaningful way we could honor him, and we discussed trail-side memorials, such as benches and bike work stands - you can see some of his reflections on it here: dropcancer.org
Ultimately, we (his family) felt like Eric deserves both, so we plan to put a bench in Umstead State Park and a bike work stand at Harris Lake County Park. We invite those who knew and loved Eric to contribute to these memorials and encourage all to visit and use them once they are in place.
