Eric Craig Filcoff passed away peacefully at his home on April 17, 2026 after a courageous fight with appendiceal adenocarcinoma. Bikes were Eric's first love and were a consistent source of adventure, connection, and joy for him throughout his life. All throughout cancer treatment, he found ways to keep riding, allowing him to feel like himself and be in his happy place. He even had the distinction of being the first person our hospice nurse had ever cared for that still rode a bike (or, as he would correct - a trike).

Towards the end of his life, he reflected on a meaningful way we could honor him, and we discussed trail-side memorials, such as benches and bike work stands - you can see some of his reflections on it here:  dropcancer.org

Ultimately, we (his family) felt like Eric deserves both, so we plan to put a bench in Umstead State Park and a bike work stand at Harris Lake County Park. We invite those who knew and loved Eric to contribute to these memorials and encourage all to visit and use them once they are in place.

Wow...thank you all. It is amazing to have another way to see just how loved Eric was. I wanted to share some updates - we are now moving forward with the bench at Umstead State Park. I heard back that there was approval for the bench and we are now waiting on location options. Once we know where and approximate timeline, I will share updates.

I was also able to get in touch with the person at Harris Lake that Eric had been in contact with. They are in the middle of construction project and are looking into the options for a bike work stand. This one may take a little longer, but will keep you all posted!

We will definitely be able to do more than initially planned, which is amazing. Umstead may be able to use a bike work stand, and I am going to contact some places in the mountains where Eric loved riding to see if there are options for work stands there.

Thank you again. These are going to be such meaningful ways to honor and remember Eric.

We are so touched by the outpouring of love for Eric and so quickly meeting our goal. Anything over the original goal amount will either go towards upgrading our current options, adding another work stand in an additional location, or be donated to the Appendix Cancer Research Foundation.  It is clear how much Eric meant to so many people and it means the world to our family that so many would like to honor the amazing life he lived.
