Our family is asking for help for my mom as she begins a journey none of us ever expected.
Earlier this year, doctors discovered a tumor approximately the size of a cantaloupe on her uterus. In June, she underwent surgery to have the tumor removed. When the biopsy results came back, we learned that it was actually Stage 4 low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN), a rare cancer originating from the appendix.
After speaking with her doctors, it was recommended that she travel to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas, where she can receive specialized care for this rare type of cancer.
Her next major step is an extensive surgery scheduled for October. We have been told to expect the surgery to last approximately 10–12 hours. A major operation like this will come with a long recovery, but we have also been given a great deal of hope. Her doctors have told us that patients can respond very well to this treatment and that many are able to live long lives afterward. God willing, my mom will be one of those people.
My mom is incredibly strong, but we have reached a point where she simply cannot carry the financial burden of this journey on her own. Asking others for help, especially financial help, is incredibly difficult for her, but right now our family needs the support of our friends, family, and community.
For her surgery, we expect to need to stay in Texas for approximately one month. Donations will help cover expenses including:
Airfare to and from Texas
Housing during her treatment and recovery
Food and transportation while we are away from home
Medical expenses and other costs associated with her care
Additional trips to Texas for follow-up appointments and treatment
We know this may not be our only trip to Texas. If we are blessed enough to raise more than what is needed for this first trip, those funds will go toward future travel and medical expenses related to her cancer treatment.
