A new understanding of food insecurity has come to light in recent months, especially as SNAP benefits were suspended. And we have an amazing resource in Baton Rouge... community fridges! These fridges act as a form of mutual aid. Those who can share, share; and those who have a need can receive!!
As a food business owner, I feel a higher level of conviction in figuring out how to use our space and resources to be a part of helping to alleviate food insecurity, one community fridge meal at a time. In an effort to make this a more sustainable venture, we are hoping to raise $10,000. This would allow my bakery to close on Mondays and instead use our resources for meal preparation for the community!
This feels like a BOLD ask, but in reality... it's just asking each of our instagram followers for $1/each. Or a week's worth of customers for $5/each!
With support like this we could expand beyond just sandwiches, and cook more nourishing and flavorful meals. We can work to incorporate meals with dietary needs. We can also keep this project going for the long haul, and not just when food insecurity is a national headline.
We will also be using our Mondays (and hopefully Saturday afternoon's) to host volunteers to assist in our efforts! It truly is a privilege to have the space and resources and access to bulk food items, and I am eager to use these resources to their fullest potential within our community!
