James and Karla Murray, the married duo based in New York's East Village, have made it their mission to thoroughly document unique mom-and-pop stores when they first began to notice the alarming rate at which the shops were disappearing. The couple is currently raising funds for a free public workshop and exhibition to highlight participants' work at the The Theater For The New City Gallery in the East Village from September - October 2019.
“Capturing the Faces & Voices of Mom-and-Pop Storefronts” is a photography, social media, and oral history workshop focusing on the cultural significance of neighborhood stores and the impact they have on the pulse, life, and texture of their communities. The workshops culminate in both online (website and dedicated Instagram page) and public exhibitions of participants’ work.
The workshops teach how photography, social media, and oral history can be tools for public awareness and advocacy. Participants will learn to create their own powerful photographs of neighborhood storefronts as well as record oral histories with shop owners, which communicate artistically and are insightful and moving. Participants will also gain valuable knowledge in how to present their work in a meaningful and engaging manner on social media.
Support James and Karla Murray's partner organization, the East Village Community Coalition with a small donation to ensure that the many unique small businesses in the East Village and all around the City remain open and survive for many more years.
