At least eight people have died as a result of unprecedented flooding in Louisiana and southern Mississippi. Rainfall in the region has left 15 rivers in record flood stage.
The federal government has declared a major disaster in Louisiana. 20,000 people have been rescued from flooded homes and vehicles.
The torrential rains in the region have eased, but the threat is far from over. "It's not over," said Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards. "The water's going to rise in many areas. It's no time to let the guard down."
The American Red Cross is helping approximately 5,000 people in dozens of emergency shelters in Louisiana after unprecedented flooding has left 15 rivers in record flood stage.
