Help Us Honor the Life of Michael Spencer Jr.
On August 12, 2026, our family suffered an unimaginable and devastating loss. Our beloved Michael Spencer Jr., just 37 years old, was senselessly and violently taken from us.
Michael went to the New Haven Free Public Library that afternoon to handle some personal business using a computer. While inside the library, another man nearby was playing music loudly. Michael politely asked him to turn the music down, simply trying to avoid a disturbance and maintain the peace.
What happened next was completely unexpected.
The man became increasingly aggressive and irrational. At one point, he lunged a chair toward Michael. A library security officer, Justine, intervened and caught the chair before it struck him. My brother addressed the situation and told the man that his behavior was inappropriate and that he needed to leave the library.
Both men were directed to leave. Michael had absolutely no desire to continue the confrontation. He was ready to walk away from the entire situation. He did not believe his life was in danger, especially after the other man had been escorted out.
Security took the additional precaution of walking Michael out of the library to make sure he was safe. Michael then continued on his way, believing the situation was over.
It wasn't.
The man who had been escorted from the library apparently remained determined to continue the altercation . he pursued Michael through downtown New Haven. Michael was pursued attacked and stabbed multiple times.
Despite suffering these devastating injuries, Michael somehow managed to keep going. He made it as far as the bus stop near the intersection of Temple Street and Elm Street. In complete shock, he was still trying to continue on to his next destination and escape what had happened to him.
Eventually, Michael collapsed.
The same New Haven Free Public Library security officer who had tried to protect him earlier rushed to his aid and stayed with him, doing everything possible to keep him conscious until emergency medical help arrived. Michael repeatedly cried out, “Oh my God! Oh my God!” in disbelief.
He had nearly made it.
He had nearly escaped.
But his injuries were too severe.
Michael succumbed to his injuries at Yale New Haven Hospital.
At the time, no one knew how to reach his family. Police ultimately had to search a database to locate me and notify me of what had happened. The attack occurred at approximately 2:56 PM. Tragically, while this was happening, I was sharing news articles about the incident online, completely unaware that the victim was my own brother.
There are no words to describe the pain of learning that way.
Michael was not prepared to leave this world. He did not have an established life insurance policy or a financial plan in place for something like this. None of us could have imagined that we would suddenly be faced with planning a funeral for a 37-year-old who should have had so many more years ahead of him.
Who Michael Was
Michael was so much more than the tragedy that took his life.
He attended Roosevelt Elementary, Blackham Middle SChool, Bridgeport , Living Word Christian Academy, Kolbe Cathedral High School, and James Hillhouse High School in New Haven. He continued his education at Livingston College, Housatonic Community College, and Berkeley College in New York.
Michael was unique. He was creative, artistic, fashionable, and completely his own person. He had a love for fashion and art and expressed himself in a way that was unmistakably Michael.
He was truly a one-of-one.
Michael kept to himself and valued the people he trusted and loved. He had no criminal record and was simply living his life when an ordinary trip to the library turned into an unimaginable tragedy.
To know Michael was to know someone special.
Our family is devastated by the fact that his life was taken so senselessly, violently, and unnecessarily. Michael did not deserve this. No one does.
Please Help Our Family
We are asking for help with the unexpected expenses that come with losing a loved one so suddenly and tragically. Because Michael did not have life insurance or a financial plan in place, our family is now facing funeral and burial expenses while simultaneously trying to process the shock and grief of losing him.
Every contribution, no matter the amount, will help us give Michael the beautiful and dignified farewell he deserves.
If you are unable to contribute financially, please consider sharing this GoFundMe. Your prayers, condolences, messages, and support mean more to our family than words can express.
Michael was somebody.
He was somebody's son, brother, family member, friend, classmate, and loved one.
He had dreams, creativity, personality, and a life that should have continued.
His life was taken far too soon.
We are asking for your help to bring Michael home, honor his memory, and give him the send-off he deserves.
Rest peacefully, Michael Spencer Jr. You were loved. You are missed. And you will never be forgotten.
With love and gratitude,
The Spencer Family
