The Journey of an Old Bicycle
In a small alley on the edge of the city lived an 11-year-old boy named Lukas. Every morning, before the sun had fully risen, Lukas would wake up early to help his mother sell sticky rice near the school gate. After that, he would rush to class on his old bicycle.
That bicycle was the most valuable thing their family owned. It was rusty, the pedals were loose, and the chain often slipped off in the middle of the road. But Lukas never complained. He would simply smile and say:
“As long as it can still move, I can still go to school.”
One rainy morning, Lukas fell on his way to school. His books were soaked, his knees were scraped, and the back wheel of the bicycle broke completely. He sat quietly by the roadside for a long time — not because he was hurt, but because he was afraid he would have to stop going to school.
When his teacher heard about what happened, she visited Lukas’s home. Inside a tiny room no bigger than 15 square meters, she saw Lukas’s mother sewing late into the night to earn enough money for rent. Holding back tears, the mother said:
“As long as my son can continue studying, I can endure any hardship.”
The next day, the teacher shared Lukas’s story during the school assembly. The entire room fell silent. For the first time, many students realized that going to school every day was not something everyone could take for granted.
A small donation box was placed in the school office. Slowly, contributions began to fill it — some gave a few dollars, others gave more. Even the woman who sold drinks outside the school quietly donated part of her daily earnings.
Two weeks later, Lukas was given a brand-new bicycle.
Holding the bicycle tightly, he burst into tears in the middle of the schoolyard. He bowed deeply and said:
“I promise I will study hard so that one day I can help others the way people helped me today.”
Sometimes, a small act of kindness is more than just a gift.
It gives a child the chance to keep dreaming.
