Help Ricky Walk Again: A Life-Changing Treatment for Chronic GVHD
A Brave Fighter’s Journey
Ricky’s life has been a battle against overwhelming odds, but his strength and resilience are nothing short of inspiring. Diagnosed with Juvenile Xanthogranuloma (JXG) at just 8 months old, he endured four years of chemotherapy. At five, a near-drowning incident left him in a medically induced coma for a month. Then, at 10, Ricky was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), which required aggressive treatments, including CAR-T cell therapy, full-body radiation twice a day for three days, and a bone marrow transplant from his father.
While the transplant saved his life, it also triggered Chronic Graft-versus-Host Disease (GVHD), a life-threatening condition in which his immune system attacks his own body. Today, Ricky is confined to a wheelchair, suffering from severe pain, joint damage, muscle loss, and inflammation. His condition has become so complex that he is one of the most challenging patients at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County. The doctors there are at a loss, unable to explain why his condition has deteriorated so much or what to do next. This uncertainty has left Ricky’s parents feeling desperate and overwhelmed, as though they are running out of options.
Our Goal: Stem Cell Therapy to Reverse GVHD and Restore Mobility
In search of answers, Ricky’s parents sought help from outside his current medical team. That's when they turned to Forgotten Formula PMA, a network of doctors and clinics dedicated to treating the root causes of diseases. The founder of Forgotten Formula PMA, Michael Blake, took Ricky under his wing and picked up where Children’s Hospital had reached an impass, helping to get Ricky on the right path. With Michael Blake's guidance, Ricky was introduced to Dr. Holtorf and the team at Holtorf Medical Group. There, Ricky met Dr. Mortenson, a former flight medic known for his ability to confront challenges that others shy away from. Together, they developed a comprehensive treatment plan that gives Ricky the best chance to heal and live the life he deserves.
Doctors believe that IV mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy offers Ricky his best chance for recovery. MSCs have shown remarkable promise in reducing inflammation, repairing damaged tissues, and restoring immune balance—potentially reversing the effects of GVHD. However, insurance has denied coverage for this therapy, as it has not yet been FDA-approved for chronic GVHD.
