My father served in the United States Marine Corps. He served honorably for five years and when he returned home to our family he was no longer the person he was when he left. He was injured severely in his back and knees and suffered from depression and post traumatic stress disorder resulting from his deployment. My father simply wanted to make the world that children like his daughter grew up in to be a safe and welcoming place, yet the sacrifices that he made for us continued to wear on him until the very end. My family is not the only family that has suffered this way. 1.8 million out of the 1.9 deployed soldiers have suffered from life altering disabilities as a result of the post 9/11 wars in Iraq and Afghanistan alone.
The Wounded Warrior Project prides itself in supporting and creating programs for disabled veterans and their families. As a little girl my father was my superhero but parts of him never left the battlefield, he continued to struggle from within. The financial support from the Wounded Warrior Project helped greatly in order for us to begin our new life.
