Girl Powerful™ is a youth empowerment nonprofit designed to give tween and teen girls social and emotional learning (SEL) tools to build a strong sense of self, founded by Sonya and Tedi Serge.
The COVID-19 outbreak stopped the Girl Powerful (GP) program in schools and underserved community centers, so they moved their efforts to connect with youth online. GP has been offering virtual classes and they’ve taken off, with 50+ girls signed up from California to Texas to Maine. The virtual classroom follows the Girl Powerful Journal and evidence-based SEL curriculum. Each virtual class is a safe, supportive and fun 50 minutes the girls can count on to build self-esteem, express their feelings and connect with others.
With the popularity of their virtual classroom and mention in Forbes, families have been reaching out regarding the need for their daughters to have a safe space to meet with their peers, but have been hit hard financially. One mom wrote, "...we are down to our last penny. I never thought we would be asking for a scholarship but when I saw that you were offering financial aid I was really happy my daughter didn't have to miss out."
GP never wants to turn away a girl from participating due to socio-economic issues. In response to the demand, GP founded the Girl Powerful Scholarship Fund. This fund will pay for girls' enrollment into the 5 week course and also provide them with the Girl Powerful Journal.
For #GivingTuesdayNow Girl Powerful's goal is to raise $3,000 to support 30 families who have been affected financially by COVID-19. Girls will be accepted into the program for the next session starting in May 2020.
You can double your donation today! Spotfund will be matching donations up to the first $500. Women Connect4Good is matching the next $500.
Girl Powerful has grown 40% over the past year and is continuing to build, proving that they can pivot and stay true to their mission of making tween and teens girls feel seen, valued and heard during complicated times. Join us in lifting each other up and creating a movement of strong girls who know their value and are proud of who they are.
