January 2025, a concerned citizen had posted on a local pet group to Facebook stating that she had found two pitbulls chained up on an abandoned piece of property. They had rundown plastic igloo houses with no type of insulation or bedding to protect them from the upcoming winter storm. Their water bowls were frozen solid and their food dishes remained empty for days. This citizen had spent the previous week providing food and whatever else she could to help these dogs survive all while making numerous phone calls to Animal Control. After a few phone calls, officers were sent out to the dogs locations to check on them but because this citizen had been caring for them the officers had decided that the dogs were fine. Taking matters into her own hands, this good Samaritan eventually cut the chains from the dogs’ necks and brought them to me so that they could have warmth, shelter and safety.
In the almost four weeks that the dogs were in my care, they had gained weight, learned what it felt like to run freely off of chains and received medical care- one dog was diagnosed with lyme disease and the other had a questionable mass that needed removing. Both dogs had clearly been bred at least once- if not more. I immediately made appointments to get them spayed and to get them healthy. Unfortunately, before we could do so- animal control had reached out to inform me that I needed to give the dogs back because they were now considered “stolen” property and that felony charges were pending for the woman who had removed them from their chains.
November 24, 2025, we have our final day in court regarding the two cases of larceny and the case is settled.
November 25, 2025 I receive a call from Animal control telling me that the two dogs (plus four more!) were found emaciated and neglected on the property of the woman who owned the dogs I had originally rescued. They asked me if I would be willing to adopt the two dogs that I had previously cared for and that I needed to be prepared for what I saw- because they were no longer in the same condition they were in when I had them. They are emaciated, been bred an unknown amount of times, have scars on their faces/body and open wounds/sores on their skin.
These dogs were failed in every possible way….
I intend to get them justice eventually but first thing first- I need to get them medical care and I need to create a safe environment for them at my home so they can heal mentally and physically.
I’m not normally one to ask for help but the severity of their medical conditions on top of having to set up a piece of our land for them (fencing, heated housing, etc) is not something we were prepared to do right now. I’m asking that if any of our family or friends are able to- to donate in honor of these two sweet girls who are just now getting a fresh start at life. 🩷💜
