Lucky spent most of her early life as the star attraction of the Lucky Circus in Surin Province, where she began entertaining tourists when she was just four years old. Her routines, performed under harsh lights and loud music, took a serious toll on her health. In her late teens, she developed an eye infection but was still forced to perform, eventually leading to complete blindness.
Even after leaving the circus, Lucky’s exploitation continued. Her owners used her for rides and photo sessions until she could no longer handle the stress. She was then chained in a backyard, where repeated efforts to breed her were unsuccessful.
Eventually, financial hardship led her owners to contact Save Elephant Foundation, and Lucky was rescued in February 2013. She adjusted quickly to her new life at the sanctuary, joining Mae Bua Loy and Mae Boon Ma shortly after her arrival, and later befriending Grandma Baan Yen. Their friendships played a crucial role in her recovery. Over the following years, Lucky was deeply affected by the passing of her friends at different times. For a while, she remained solitary, mourning the loss of her companions.
Despite her grief, Lucky has formed new friendships with Jenny, Thong Ae, and Faa Mai. Though blind, she navigates her surroundings with confidence and grace, and especially enjoys spending time in the river, playing with her younger friends. Her resilience and capacity for connection are truly inspiring.
