My name is Vera Jane, and I am seeking financial assistance in order to afford gender affirming care in the form of FTM top surgery, or breast augmentation. (Breast reduction)
I have sought care through medical professionals and have been met with transphobia from providers telling me I should "try therapy, because the problem may just go away" - the problem being my gender identity - insinuating I can talk away my trans-ness. That my gender identity is an issue that needs to be solved.
I've also attempted to obtain gender affirming surgery through planned Parenthood, but their policy requires you to be on testosterone for one year before they will grant you a surgery referral, and I do not have the desire to be on hormones. They are not necessary for me to feel secure in my trans identity or for me to experience gender euphoria.
I have contacted insurance and it is unclear if I am able to receive coverage for all or any medical costs, and I would still be responsible for travel/recovery/food/other expenses pre and post operation. I am currently under financial strain/hardship as I am unemployed and a student with high rent which I currently pay with financial aid through my school, and supplementing my income selling art and clothing.
I have desired top surgery for 5 years now and am finally taking the bigger steps to make it happen for myself. I am applying for grants and scholarships, and one thing they ask for is that you try and crowd fund/ fund-raise for your surgery costs, so that is what I'm doing here.
