Every year at the beginning of the school year, our home becomes a special gathering place where students from Howard University can come together under one roof. This tradition has grown to mean so much to us because it gives students an opportunity to reconnect, meet new people, celebrate the start of another school year, and enjoy a welcoming space surrounded by members of the Howard community.
Unfortunately, during this year’s gathering, an unexpected accident occurred. One of the attendees sat on our marble kitchen island, which is approximately two inches thick, and the marble suddenly snapped. This was extremely surprising because we have lived in this home for more than six years and have never experienced any problems with the island. Over the years, there have even been occasions when four or more people were sitting or gathered on the marble island at the same time without it cracking, shifting, or showing any visible signs of damage. Until this incident, we had no reason to believe that the marble was at risk of breaking.
The damage has left us with an unexpected and costly repair. Because this home has become a place where we enjoy bringing Howard students together, we would love to have the island repaired and the space restored so that we can continue this annual tradition for years to come.
We are asking our friends, family, fellow students, alumni, and members of the Howard University community to consider contributing toward the cost of repairing or replacing the damaged marble island. Any amount, no matter how small, would make a meaningful difference and bring us one step closer to restoring our gathering space.
Our goal is bigger than simply replacing a piece of marble. We want to continue creating a place where Howard students can gather, build friendships, make memories, and start each school year together. This annual gathering has become something we truly value, and we hope this unexpected setback will not prevent us from continuing it.
