Colton was a stray that my wife and I took in several years ago. He is the sweetest boy! Unfortunately, he has severe stomatitis, which causes painful swelling and sores in his mouth, and makes his gums bright red. This is caused by his body overreacting to bacteria in his mouth.
A few months ago, Colton went to the vet for a full mouth extraction (getting all of his teeth out). This is thought to reduce the symptoms of stomatitis, and it did help him. The vet bill came to over $2,000, as he was under anesthesia for 4 hours and 16 minutes.
Unfortunately, because he has a heart murmur and is FIV+ (compromised immune system), they had to wake him up, and therefore, they were not able to extract the last of his 3 canine teeth, which are now causing him extreme pain and his gums are bleeding. So, Colton has to go back in for a second dental surgery, and the vet is not giving my wife or me any kind of discount, so this is going to cost us over $1,000, if not more.
When I picked up Colton for his discharge, the vet didn't tell me about having to wake him up after the 4 hour and 16 minute period because he was at risk if they didn't. They told me they didn't take out the last 3 canines because they "seemed stable and healthy" and they didn't feel they needed to come out, and in the same sentence, they also said that Colton would probably have to come back "at some point" to have the last three teeth taken out. Of course, I didn't think it would be in less than 3 months.
My wife and I have many other rescue cats, but we are not non-profit, so we don't get very many donations. I have been doing cat rescue since 1994 after coming home for England after 8 years in the Air Force with 4 cats. This is my passion.
But, every so often, I need help. So, I'm asking for help. I keep telling him, "Colton, you have other brothers and sisters who need mommy's money for vet bills and food," but he just rolls his eyes (yep, cats CAN roll their eyes lol), and then farts and curls up in my lap.
No amount is too small. Every amount will be greatly appreciated. Colton thanks you now, as do I and my wife!
