They convinced her that her accounts were under attack and manipulated her into withdrawing her own money and sending it to them under extreme fear and psychological pressure.
By the time she realized it was a scam, her life savings were gone.
She has now lost over $100,000.
This money was what she depended on for rent, food, medical expenses, and basic living costs. Her bank accounts are now completely depleted. She currently has all available loans and several credit cards maxed out just to survive the last few weeks. I am now helping manage her accounts and put many safeguards in place.
My mom is not reckless or careless. She is kind, trusting, and has always lived modestly and responsibly. These criminals used authority impersonation, fear tactics, and psychological coercion that even very intelligent people fall for every day. Elder scams like this are now one of the fastest-growing crimes in the United States.
As if this were not enough, my mom is now facing another devastating blow.
She is currently enduring a lawsuit brought by her own siblings over the small amount of money her late mother left her in a trust. Instead of supporting her through this crisis, they are suing her to try to take that remaining inheritance away from her. She recently had gone through radiation, survived cancer and now works 6 days a week at the age of 76, living paycheck to paycheck.
The emotional and financial strain of this legal battle has been overwhelming.
She now urgently needs $68,000 to cover:
• Immediate attorney fees to defend herself in this lawsuit
• Rent, utilities, and basic living expenses for the next two months
