June 1st, 2024 I was diagnosed with recurrent metastasis of Stage 4b Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma with a BRAF mutation with a tumor on the 9th/10th intercostal nerve in my chest. I am now on an oral radiation for 94 days, as well as 2x's/week of injections. After completion of the oral treatment, I will then undergo 6 weeks of daily external beam radiation therapy. It is my understanding that I will not be able to swallow, therefore a tube will be placed for me to receive nutrition through. Once that is complete, chemotherapy could be introduced to my treatment.
The daily oral medication is 17$/day. It was 20$/day, but the pharmaceutical company discounted it to 17/day. The dr visits are 20$ copay per visit, not including the days I go for labs or injections. The hospital I receive care at is being WONDERFUL and working with me on a financial plan. They have discounted inpatient admissions by 43% and have set me up on a payment plan. However, I have a deductible. I have applied for SSDI (in which I used an attorney to help me expedite the process but it still takes up to 6 months. I will receive Medicare if/when approved for SSDI.)
I am currently experiencing severe bouts of nausea, dizziness and lightheadedness. My throat is consistently painful, and by the end of the day, I have a difficult time swallowing. I am physically EXHAUSTED all the time (although I have a great way to put on a mask that shows smiles).
My mortgage is 2 months behind. They, too, are working with me. I am meeting with their financial advisor on 8/19 (the earliest they could get me in). I am barely able to get food into the house. I have 2 kids and grocery prices are out of control.
I'm looking in to foundations, scholarships, hardship assistance.
I've been met mostly with kindness from everyone I have encountered this far. I am beyond fearful that my family will fall through the cracks financially. This is EXTREMELY difficult for me to ask for help. I am a very humble, hard working, caring and compassionate person who always puts others first. I suppose it's my time to put myself first.
This is literal life or death.

Well, it's struck again. The big C. But in a new and fun way......
Cari has had s stroke. Left side is not able to move. Not much more to update on right now. Will keep updating as soon as I know more.
