Meet Octavia!

She was found on September 5th at a colony in Durham where I have been TNR'ing the adult cats that a local woman feeds outside of her home. She looked to be about 2 weeks old, covered in fleas with one eye caked shut. After a couple weeks with her it became clear that both of her back legs weren't working, one was twisted underneath her and the other was stuck straight out.

Today (10/15) we had an appointment at Quartet Veterinary Hospital in Cary, NC with a specialist who took new xrays and sent them off to a neurologist who has extensive experience with small kittens. The vet also made us a couple homemade harnesses that she wants us to use with Octavia 6 times a day to try and strengthen her back right leg and gain some motility.

I will upload the receipt from todays visits as well as her other vet appointments.

I want to thank each one of you for donating to help us fund Octavia’s medical treatment so we could strengthen her back leg and help her to learn to walk with it.

I am devastated to have to tell you all that Octavia died early yesterday morning in the arms of my sweet lovely friend Brenda.

Brenda found her around 730am laying half on, half off her bed. She picked her up and she was non responsive but still alive. Brenda brought her over to the fireplace and held her until she passed. And like our girl was want to do, she gave Brenda one last final love bite on her hand, with those baby shark teeth.

We have no idea what happened. She was so full of energy and joy and life, running circles around Tater Tot, and Brenda, and me, and Dana. She seemed to be so healthy and really thriving. She was exercising in her little harness several times a day, building muscles in her back leg.

When she passed I was at the house in Durham where I found her, trying to trap the last of the colony that has been a struggle for over a month. Miraculously I trapped the 2 cats I have been trying for plus 2 new ones, and I’d like to think Octavia was with me. She knew I was there to help the cats, like I helped her.

I’m keeping the fundraiser open for a while, as we still need to finish paying her medical bills. Eventually I’d like to create a memorial fund in Octavia’s name, for all special needs cats I find, that deserve love and a home.

here are the last photos I took of her.

thank you again

With love,

Izzy
