Life took an unexpected turn when my wife, Sheila, faced a series of hurdles that seemed insurmountable. Two years ago, a series of hip surgeries had already begun to strain us, but the real challenge came with a fall that resulted in a severe concussion. Watching her endure the aftermath has been one of the hardest things I've ever experienced. Ten months have passed, yet Sheila still struggles with post-concussion syndrome, leaving her unable to return to work and live the vibrant life she once did.
In Colorado Springs, surrounded by the mountains that we once hiked together, I now find myself battling a different kind of mountain. We have been waiting anxiously for support from social security, but the process is agonizingly slow and uncertain. Each day presents a new financial worry, and the thought of losing our home is a constant shadow over us. Our savings have dwindled, leaving us to rely on the kindness of friends and family.
Despite everything, Sheila remains resilient, finding small joys in our children’s laughter and quiet moments in our garden. I am doing my best to stay strong for her, to navigate this storm with hope and perseverance. My heart aches seeing her in pain and unable to enjoy the world as she once did. Sharing our story has been difficult, but I believe in the power of community and the support it can bring.
