Like a monarch butterfly’s ability to freely fly, mobility grants us the capacity to independently move through the world. When our ability to mobilize dissipates, our world becomes smaller and the independence we once had dissipates too.
Starting in 2017, my health began to decline after the birth of my second son. Over the years, dizziness, unsteadiness, fatigue, and chronic pain affected my mobility. In 2021, I was diagnosed with a Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) Leak and Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, both of which attributed to the decline of my motility and autonomy as a human being.
My world became smaller the less I was able to walk, until eventually I was trapped within the four white walls of my home. I could no longer endure the distance around a store, nor could I safely walk from my car to a bench to get my children from school. It was then that I was introduced to my first rollator walker, making my world just that much bigger. It handed me my key to liberation; my renewed independence and freedom.
I want to make it my mission to get anyone who needs a mobility aid and cannot afford one (or insurance will not cover one) so they can have the same liberty that I’ve been granted. Aid us in the freedom of mobility, and together we can grant our chronically ill and disabled friends wings of freedom to make their world that much bigger.
