On July 21st, my best friend Laura's life changed forever when her husband was in a devastating motorcycle crash. At 7:01am that day, John Lotz was driving to work in the HOV lanes of I-10 outside Houston, TX, protected by helmet and jacket, when a vehicle driver crossed 4 lanes of traffic, through pylons, and crashed directly into him.

His initial injuries were a broken clavicle, right side ribs all broken, multiple back fractures, bruises, and scrapes. Tragically, he also sustained a traumatic brain injury, and has been in unbearable pain.  As details of the crash unfold, we are amazed, blessed, and thankful that he even survived.

He spent time recovering at Herman Memorial Katy Hospital and was transferred to TIRR Herman Memorial in Houston on July 30.

The love and support of family has been an enormous blessing, with family traveling in from PA, and amazing local friends arranging meal trains and other support. While this has eased their burden greatly over the past two weeks, it is now painfully clear that additional support is needed in the coming months.

The reason is not just the crash. In June, Laura's job position was eliminated. She had begun actively interviewing, but now, at a time when John needs her most, those plans need to take a back seat. And with John also not working, this has put the family into hardship for the near term, especially with medical costs mounting. We have all put this into God's hands, knowing that whatever they need will come at the right time through this humble request.

The good news from doctors and therapists give us hope for recovery, but advise that it will be a long, slow process. So to all Prayer warriors, please continue to pray for John's full recovery, and for God to guide the hands of the caregivers every step of the way. Please reach out to Laura directly if you'd like to visit John and encourage him while he is recuperating.

Thank you all so much for your loving support and assistance during this challenging time for the Lotz family.

On behalf of Laura & John Lotz,
I thank you from the bottom of my heart,

Jeanne Alleva

Update – August 19th

As we near the 30-day mark on John’s recovery journey, I wanted to take a moment to share an update—and, most importantly, to say THANK YOU.

We have been deeply touched by the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from so many of you. Your generous donations—both financial and in the form of meals—have been a true blessing. Words often fall short, but please know how much your kindness has helped ease the weight of this journey.

From the very beginning, I have trusted that God has a plan. When my job was unexpectedly eliminated in June, I didn’t fully understand why—but it became clear that it was a gift in disguise. It has allowed me to be fully present with John every day, exactly where I need and want to be.

While we don’t yet know when either of us will return to work, your support has allowed us to focus on healing without the constant stress of what lies ahead. For that, we are profoundly grateful.

John continues to face the daily challenge of managing significant pain, but his determination remains strong. We've started venturing out for small outings and daily walks, and tomorrow he’ll begin his next phase of therapy. A recent cognitive evaluation at Neuro Restorative gave us encouraging news—while there’s still healing ahead, the next three months are expected to be pivotal. His care team remains optimistic, and so do we.

Please continue to lift John up in prayer—for strength, for relief from pain, and for continued progress in body, mind, and spirit.

With all our hearts, thank you for walking this road with us. We feel your love every single day.

After 22 1/2 days John is home today!

Monday at Rehab, he did what he loves to do and feed people!!! He wasn't able to use a smoker... but he cooked up some great burnt ends and asparagus wrapped in bacon for the staff!

He will start a Day Program with more PT and brain therapy. We still have some challenges with short-term memory and cognitive issues, but John continues to work hard and get better and stronger every day.

Thank you all again for your continued prayers and your donations to help us through this challenging time.

We've got an Update from Laura:

I thought it was time for an update as we received good news yesterday and John continues to work hard towards recovery.

Day 17:  after 10 days in ICU and 7 days in rehab we have a tentative discharge date of August 13th!

From here,  we had a choice to check him in another facility or do out-patient rehab for post-acute care.  We've chosen to bring him home. I need to bring him to therapy daily.  We just felt him being home and in his own surroundings would be better and ease his anxiety.

He will require 24-hour supervision. Any and all local friends are welcome to drop by on weekends and evenings to chat with John and keep his brain active regarding the different areas of his life. And give me a slight break to run errands or clear my head.

Physically John continues to be, at times, in unbearable pain from the injuries. Broken ribs and back fractures take a long time to heal. But he is strong and working through the pain as best he can during physical therapy.

Cognitively, in the early stages he was not aware of anything.  He knew who he was and who we were but did not understand why he was in the hospital and luckily still does not remember the accident itself.

As his brain heals, he is definitely John...his fun self, teasing the doctors and nurses whenever possible.  The brain trauma is more logic-based...putting things in order, answering word problems and completing basic math.  I think maybe we should be watching Sesame Street..."one of these things is not like the other"...

The doctors are positive, but saying that we have many months to go before we discuss independence. He still has short-term memory challenges and is starting to understand what has happened and how life is no longer the same.

Thank you so much for the cards and letters...and please keep them coming as it really brightens his day!

Will send another update soon. Thank you again.
