My daughter, Rae, has a special love for horses. 6 years ago, she saved a brother and sister at 10 months old who were left in a field. Romeo, was very under weight and small for his age. Princess was untrusting and no one could get near her. Over the years, Rae has worked diligently with them to gain their trust and they’ve developed into a loving and rideable pair.
A couple of months ago, Rae saw a grey Percheron posted on FB with 3 spray painted X’s on his side. Without telling anyone, she and an anonymous donor paid his bail and he was relocated to my daughter’s leased pastures in GA from AR. Rae was told the horse came from a farm in Maine and was 15 years old. Rae was told the horse was never given a name. That didn’t sit well with her so she immediately named him after her late grandfather, Jack, whom she inherited her love of horses from. Big Jack was bathed, vetted, and his hooves were trimmed. Within days, Big Jack settled in and Rae’s ranch had become home.
Rae expressed to me how many more great horses were in slaughter and how much it was bothering her that she couldn’t save more of them. After many long conversations with her about finances, Rae has been adamant that she has to do more for save these innocent horses from heading to slaughter mills in Mexico. Rae has since saved 3 more draft horses and is determined to find them forever homes so she can continue saving more but she can’t do it without help. Many of these horses are severely under weight, have body scores of less than 1, and require extensive veterinary and farrier care. Her long term goal is to get her own property but in the meantime, she needs help for veterinarian expenses, farrier expenses, feed and hay costs, and transportation fees from the slaughter mill to her ranch.
My daughter is a police officer and is always willing to risk her life to save others. Rescuing these horses isn’t only saving them but it’s saving my daughter too! I hear the excitement in her voice, the light in her eyes shines a little brighter, and her passion shows through her determination in saving these gentle giants. So, as Rae’s mother, I’m asking for your help. Police officers never ask for help because they’re the ones always helping others and it would mean a lot to me if her community would help give back and make this police officer’s dream a reality.
