Avi's Mitzvah Mission

My brother, Avi, is on his way to volunteer as a guard in small villages in Northern Israel. The picture above is of me, my husband Josh and Avi when he volunteered in the Israeli army 15 years ago.  One of his best and oldest friends, Yoni, lives in Misgav with his wife and their 3 daughters. As Yoni and most of the men have been called-up for reserve duty, there is a frighteningly small number of men left to protect the village.

Avi is traveling to Israel with donations that Yoni's village (Eshchar), others in Misgav and throughout the Galil can use to protect themselves:

  • 25 pairs of binoculars
  • 18 night vision monoculars
  • 8 night-vision rifle scopes
  • 11 flashlights
  • 3 two-way radio sets
  • 6 cell phone battery packs
  • paracord
  • insect repellent
  • sunglasses
  • headlamps
  • other materials that will help keep families safe

Josh and I bought all of these items before taking Avi to the airport.  The total was nearly $16,000.  This fundraiser is an effort to recoup that cost, while giving our friends in Israel materials needed to defend themselves and friends around the world a way to contribute to the safety of Israeli citizens.

Any additional money raised by this campaign will go to peaceful organizations in northern Israel.

Fundraiser Updates (3)

Thanks to the donations that have continued to come in, and our ability to find more people traveling to Israel, we've sent an additional wave of support and supplies that arrived at Ben Gurion airport this past Friday.

  • Rifle scopes
  • Handle rifle mounts
  • First aid supplies, including gauze, shears, tourniquets, and chest decompression needles
  • Medical kits
  • More 2-way radios

The communities of Eshchar and Tzivon are so grateful for these supplies. It's incredible to both help them and let them know that they're not alone.

Baruch in the Galil is grateful for your contribution

Yaron from Eshchar thanks us for our efforts

Oren is thankful for our support

I know these videos begin to sound repetitive, but the sentiment is so strong, it's worth hearing it over and over.  Israelis are scared and sad and determined, but they should not feel alone and should have everything they need to defend themselves.

Closing this fundraiser
Avi is returning to the States this week, as Yoni will be staying in Eshchar to guard his village.  Ido's kibbutz Tzivon has been evacuated (it's just 3km from the Lebanese border), but we're confident the remaining guards have materials that will help keep them safe.  So at this time we're closing this fundraiser, grateful for all of the generosity we've collectively shown our friends in Israel: 197 donors, over $30,000 and 5 personal deliveries via El Al.
Am Yisrael Chai.

Avi, Yoni and Ido continue to use the incrementally raised funds to purchase more supplies for the communities in Northern Israel.  As we've exceeded our initial goal by thousands of dollars, Avi, Yoni and Ido have purchased the following materials:

  • Super bright (5000 lumen) LED flashlights
  • Night & Day rifle scopes
  • Wildlife cameras
  • Hand mounts for the scopes
  • Ponchos, paracord and more

Training exercise in Eshchar using the materials we've supplied

Please contact me if you know of anyone flying to Israel who would be willing to bring a suitcase for Avi.

Avi arrived in Israel on Friday after an uneventful flight from New York.  Clearing customs took over 6 hours as Avi checked 12 bags-- he accumulated many more donations from friends in NYC, including hundreds of headlamps, camelback bladders, two-way radios and more.

Avi arrived at Ben Gurion airport with 12 checked bags

Once finally clearing customs, he met our friend Ido who gave Avi and the gear a ride north to the Galil.  Everyone in Eshchar greeted Avi and showed incredible appreciation for the donated items.  Ido continued north to Tzivon, the kibbutz where he lives with his family (and 3 daughters), so grateful for the gear.

The security coordinators in Misgav are now using our shopping list as a template for the region-- they aim to equip each village with comparable night-vision scopes, night-vision monoculars, binoculars, headlamps, flashlights and first aid materials.  For the 35 villages in Misgav, this will run approximately $700,000.

In a lucky turn of events, Yoni was released on Thursday afternoon for a few days rest, so he was at home when Avi arrived.  Here's a video of the two of them in Eshchar taken Saturday night.

Avi & Yoni thank you for your contributions and support

What's happening to the extra money that was raised?

Now that he's on the ground, Avi, Yoni and Ido are discussing exactly what additional materials they need.  They'll use the excess funds to buy more flashlights, wildlife cameras, first aid kits and trauma care, drones, etc.

If you know of anyone flying to Israel, please contact me for guidance on ways to expedite customs and delivery of materials that are greatly needed in villages across Israel.
