Welcome to my wife and I'd first home. We closed on this property on the 31st of July 2026. I'm writing this just 28 days after closing. We moved everything in the home after closing, we were so excited! Our first home! After I carried her over the threshold we got to work unpacking the moving truck. We still had stuff at the place we were living on the West Coast so we were only in the home a couple days before we flew out to gather the rest of our things. I flew back after a job to continue unpacking and take care of some things on the honey-do list. that day, the 25th of August, I walked around the house to see how the grass was growing and if I could cut it later, because it was a humid day, and I found this sinkhole in the ground next to the foundation.
I immediately called my wife and didn't know what to do being this is our first home. I called the realtor and he was able to come out and help calm my nerves and worked with me to try and get this resolved as soon as possible. It was late in the day so nothing was open to get this looked at so the next morning I got ahold of the Power company to see if they could come out and fix the conduit that was separated from the meter box, once the power company came out they opened the meter box and found that there was an air flash inside the box, so in turn they cut the power off from the home.
I didn't know what to do now. Now we have another problem than just a sinkhole under our newly purchased home. Once my wife heard this she was shocked (no pun intended). So what do good wives do? She got on the first flight she could and flew over to help me calm down. We've gotten multiple estimates for the fix of the hole, but there are so many other things that must happen at the same time. We have to get the AC units disconnected and reinstalled once the hole is fixed, they have to rip up our flooring inside to fill the massive void with a grout mixture to encapsulate the void, the electrical meter needs to be repaired by a certified electrician before power gets turned back on, and the cable and fiber lines will need to be remove and replaced as well. This has been nothing short of heartache for the both of us. We later found out that this is around a 230 cubic foot void and requires engineering to get fixed. We are at a loss for words. Also, because GA is a 'Buyer Beware' state we are unable to get out from under this dilemma. We absolutely love this house but can't come up with the repair costs at the moment to get things fixed.
