Tzion, an Abyudayan Jew from Uganda spent his own time reading and translating the Torah into the commonly understood written language of Luganda.

He aspires to have 10 copies of this book placed in each of the 12 synagogues across Uganda.

Let’s help him make this a reality. Donate today.

First and foremost, I want to thank all who have donated, considered donating, or who have otherwise shared this fundraising effort with their friends, family, or communities. We could never have made the impact we have without your support.

Over the past couple of months, with the support of a series of generous donations, we have made significant strides in completing the goals of this project. As you may recall, this project began with Tzion’s effort to get his new Luganda translation of the Torah into Abayudaya synagogues across Uganda. With the support of this effort, we now have printed 72 of these Chumashim, with the latest print run bringing 60 additional copies to the Abayudaya communities.

As of today, Tzion has now delivered 5 copies of this Chumash to 12 of the most established Abayudaya synagogues. These books will support Torah study for these communities, who already rely on several different translations of the Torah (in addition to the original Hebrew), allowing them to continue to deepen their Judaism in the years to come.

Thank you all for your continued support.

May this year bring forth blessings, expansive community, and peace for all!

Shabbat Shalom,

Jordan

Excited to share that we have delivered copies of our Luganda translation of the Torah to 13 different synagogues across Uganda. With future donations, we hope to get a full set of 10 to each of these synagogues, and more, but this is a wonderful start!

If you want to help us reach our goal, please consider donating and sharing this fundraiser with your community.

Thank you for helping us get this far!

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far. We're making progress toward our goals, but there's still more work ahead.

Here are a few updates:

  • We have reached 10% of our initial fundraising goal! This will allow us to print 12 Chumashim, which we plan to distribute to 12 synagogues before Simchat Torah. While our long-term goal is to provide each synagogue with 10 copies, enough to support a minyan. Still, this is a good start.
  • Over the past year, six new Abayudaya synagogues have been established. Although we hope to supply them with Chumashim in the future, we still need to raise nearly $7,000 to meet our current goal. Raising an additional $3,900 would cover this need, but for now, we’re focused on reaching our immediate target.

Why this work matters:
Uganda has very few rabbis, and those who do serve must travel between synagogues throughout the year. Some of our newer communities are in remote areas and rarely, if ever, have access to a rabbi. These communities often rely on Christian translations of the "Old Testament" for Torah study, which makes them more vulnerable to Christian proselytizing efforts. In fact, we risk losing a community to "Messianic Judaism," which many in the U.S. recognize as a branch of Evangelical Christianity.

Please consider supporting and sharing this fundraiser to help ensure that the Judaism of the Abayudaya continues to thrive.
