Everyone knows Karl!

Since 2020, Karl has been working at Angie’s restaurant and also helps out at a local pizza shop in Garner. Karl is living with sickle cell disease, a condition he approaches with hope as he prepares to begin gene therapy—a potential breakthrough that could bring him a permanent cure.

Sickle cell disease is a painful disorder caused by a single gene mutation, which leads to misshapen red blood cells that block blood flow. This can result in recurring pain, organ damage, and a shortened life expectancy.

The gene therapy procedure involves using Karl’s own bone marrow stem cells, inserting a healthy gene to prevent sickling, and then transplanting these cells back into his body. Since his own cells are used, the risk of rejection is minimized.

While there are obstacles to overcome, this treatment offers hope for a lifelong cure and the possibility of freedom from donor dependency. However, it carries risks such as the effects of chemotherapy and a month-long hospital stay.

This life-changing procedure is costly, potentially reaching two million dollars per treatment, but the hope it offers Karl and others with sickle cell disease is truly inspiring.

Karl is currently meeting with his doctors and carefully taking all the necessary steps to begin this process. We sincerely appreciate your support and donations, and we will keep you all updated on his progress during this challenging time.
