In the blink of an eye, life as you know it can change.  Opportunities to be a Good Samaritan come rarely. This is a chance to help someone get back on their feet and succeed. Someone I’d like to call a friend.

My name is Paul Rabideau.  I am a Pastor and Counselor in New Jersey. I am hoping you will help me support my friend who never dreamed that her life would take such a turn. Please open your heart as you read on...

I was introduced to Jill as a listening ear.  This woman who was brought up in a decent home, educated, had a successful career, lived in an affluent area, brought up a daughter as a single mother, yet in the blink of an eye, as the result of domestic violence, Jill became stranded in an unfamiliar area with no resources.

Jill is in Texas. The modest goal is to get her to the Northeast--to a safer place, closer to her daughter and joined with a friend with whom she can share an affordable residence.  There she will be able to find stable work, arrange regular medical care, and be restored to the person she truly is.  It is her desire to help relieve others’ suffering from displacement when hers is resolved.

I ask you kindly to contribute to a worthy individual.  I am hopeful she will get to the place (geographically and spiritually) where she will thrive again.  The goal is to raise enough for the following:

  • First month’s rent, utilities and security deposit.
  • Car related expenses before the trip.
  • Travel including modest hotels, gas and tolls (some funds have already been pledged).
  • Food before, after and during travel.
  • Upon arrival, work appropriate clothing is being donated; job search assistance has already begun.

Thank you so much in advance for your kind support.  You can also support JIll by forwarding the link to her story to others.  Thanks.

May update to the story:

Jill has been in contact with an agency that has her on a list for housing up north. She is moved up the list so it could happen at any time, or weeks or months. They can't give her timing but getting temporary housing in the meantime in the northeast would help.

She is close yet far.

A September update from Jill

It is now September, a year since this nightmare began, but now--THANKS TO YOUR HELP--a better place is ahead.

Life is busy and complicated and needs remain to make this successful.

Because I have not been on a plane for years, I was unaware of the restrictions. Luggage that fits is required. Even then, there needs to be money to ship necessary items. The car issues still need to be addressed when I get to NY. The car is essential to find work, go to work, doctors and any other necessary destinations.

Friends are providing a bed and some furniture, but I still need to get there and get established. Some uncovered expenses:

Luggage: $125

Car Insurance: $230

Registration: $50

Car repair:$500

Shipping belongings: $250

Airport transportation:$300

Due to leave in less than 12 days, again I count on some assistance to complete this chapter. AND AGAIN THANK YOU

Oct 2023 update:  After the move

Jill has made the move to Westchester County, NY!!!

She had a good day flying. Her car, shipped full of belongings, arrived as scheduled. And she got to the apartment with the help of a long-time friend. The landlord has been very kind and helpful.

Rita and I visited a few days after the move.  Jill is now only 90 minutes away from us.  The single room is very small—no kitchen, no door on the bathroom, mattress on the floor, very noisy with a busy intersection below.  But, as noted in an earlier update, this is a steppingstone!  The hope is for something better ahead.

The positives:  Jill is closer to her daughter and social service support systems and is making connections with both.  Westchester is something of a homecoming for her.

The negatives:  The size of the apartment and lack of furnishings limits her ability to do her jewelry auctions, which has been a small, but important, source of income, keeping her afloat when she was in Texas.

The big negative:  You probably heard about the flooding in New York State from one of the offshore hurricanes.  Jill’s car got flooded and is a total loss.  Before she can make progress on employment, she will need to get some transportation.  It will need to be affordable.  We are not adjusting the Spotfund goal, we are just making the need known to her supporters.

The move was the first part of the plan and a major milestone, and of course, there are new challenges.

Your support—both prayer and funding—have gotten her this far and we both appreciate it very much.  If you know of the availability of any of the following items, Jill sure could use them:  laptop computer or tablet; twin bed frame; work clothes; inexpensive car.

The possibility for an unusually affordable space in the suburbs of NY has been presented to Jill.  It has been very difficult to get this far and still is difficult. Yes, this experience has been just harrowing.

The funds donated and pledged will be used to pay first and last months rent and security, transportation for Jill, her belongings and the car.  The move could happen as early as the end of the month.  Truth be known, we are still short on funds to be successful in securing this place. Jill has begun searching for employment in NY but that will take time.

Thank you for your continued prayer and financial support.  It has been greatly appreciated.

This is an update from Jill. It is mid June.
It feels like forever that I have been here and very sad. I am working tirelessly to find a place and earn enough to get to that hopeful place. As difficult as it is to admit, I still can't do this myself. My rent has gone up again, food is expensive and I still lack the resources I need. Medical help is up on the list. I am not insured here.
I do not take your generosity for granted. Please share with your friends, family, coworkers, etc. A little can go a long way with a quantity of participants. Ipray every day to continue my life and be close to my daughter. I am not ready to give up but time is running out.
