I recently shared about the difficult loss of my dog, Cooper and while it continues to be an emotional roller coaster, I’ve also been able to learn a lot and reflect on what he and his life means to me, even (maybe especially) his life before I was able to adopt him- Cooper was an incredible canine partner and protector with me but I learned he suffered an intense amount of abuse and mistreatment and then dropped off to find his way to a dog shelter before I was fortunate enough to find him. I know this abuse played a huge part in his aggression issues and although he unfortunately had one too many incidents, the training we went through together throughout the years helped him make incredible progress- where he wasn’t scared of the broom anymore or run and hide when seeing different appliances; he was slowly able to learn that he was actually safe and loved.
This is where it all clicked for me; where the “dreams” me and Haley have been talking about doing for a while turned into a real goal- a dog sanctuary. A true safe haven for dogs, even the “aggressive” ones who just need someone to invest the time, a place where safe love meets structured training, and rehabilitation. Right now, the projected name is Cooper’s Ridge. Through research and talking to several different vets and trainers, this is where most dog shelters and sanctuaries fall short- They lack one aspect or another and the animals suffer. But the truth is, they deserve more. That’s the goal and I’m going to work to give the dogs more; A dog sanctuary that offers it all.
I know this is a really big dream and goal but I’ve seen big things happen by just starting with the small things and consistency. I’m hopeful this will happen and I’m excited to invite you to be part of it. If able, please consider donating to fund this future sanctuary where all dogs will be offered an actual second chance.
