When Douglas was 5 weeks old he was shaken by his biological parents. He spent months in the hospital and was on life support for a while. They were told that he would never walk or talk. He would never be a normal kid. At one point in time they asked the family to come in and say their goodbyes.
Against all odds he made it out and he would go to live with the Spivey's! Where Douglas would continue to reach his goals and prove the doctors wrong. A year later my husband and I would get custody of Douglas. Unfortunately we do not get foster pay we only get Medicaid from the state level. He is biologically my 2nd cousin but in reality he is my son! We have raised him for the last 5 years. After overcoming so many obstacles he needed to have surgery on a spinal cord to allow him to continue to walk. Without the surgery he would lose the ability to walk within 3 years. We finally decided to make the long trip to Ohio the closest doctor to us from NC and go forward with the surgery. Just with the initial visits, evaluations, I'm coming here initially it's cost us thousands of dollars. Insurance faught us on the surgery and we are currently appealing it. However the inpatient rehab that he needs they are not approving and his rehabilitation cost about $5000-$6000 a day. We just want to cover the cost of his rehabilitation or what we can!
