Julianne is a struggling single mother of two very active autistic children. The father lives in another state and does not offer any help other than the court ordered child support which barely covers her utilities. She works from home over the phone with a low paying customer service job while she takes care of her children as she cannot afford day care. She does not receive any government assistance for her kids (she’s told if she quits her job she can receive all kinds of help, but that’s not who she is).
Her 4-year-old, Elijah is nonverbal due to his autism and gets very frustrated when he cannot get his point across. Charlie, the 5-year-old, can communicate and is very smart but is subject to emotional outbursts.
Charlie was just had emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix. He must spend a week in the hospital, Julianne cannot leave his side. Grandma is flying in to help with Elijah (she has a broken foot and is awaiting surgery herself!)
