From teacher to lawyer to medical doctor to surgeon, biophysicist and now an aspiring Neuroscientist, Mechanical Engineer and Philanthropist, I have explored a plethora of potential careers, and none have given me the overwhelming joy, excitement or renewed sense of purpose that being a woman in STEM, specifically in Medicine, has given me. Learning new concepts, ideas and skills bring me such great joy. Fixing and being able to modify things? Few things bring me greater satisfaction; and Innovation in today’s world means setting yourself apart, and the opportunity to do that is what I live for. Therefore, I know that being a woman in STEM will bring me so much fulfilment.
As an aspiring philanthropist in medicine, revolutionary in STEM and someone who advocates for human rights and equity throughout every aspect of life, I have always held myself to a standard of, not just excellence but consistency and versatility. Said standards have kept me grounded throughout my years at the Titchfield High School and contributed to my achievements within my school and at the regional level. My acceptance into the Faculty of Medical Sciences to pursue a Bachelor of Medicine, Surgery degree at the university of the West Indies, Mona is one of the most pivotal stages in the pursuit of my ambitions. To cover the 28,000 USD per annum tuition fee, in addition to on-campus accommodation and miscellaneous fees and charges, I must rely primarily on scholarships, bursaries, grants and any sponsorships for the next five years, therefore emphasizing my dire need for financial support. My mother, a divorced single-parent to three and a civil servant employed by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, even with occasional assistance from my grand-mother, will be unable to support me and the financial obligations- brought on by my course of study.
Anyone who knows me would reiterate that one of my greatest aspirations is to become a leader in STEM- specifically as a neuroscientist and engineer- where my skills and education can bring advances in science and improve lives, especially in underserved communities. Philanthropy and nation-building are my goals, and I choose to pursue these through STEM because I am driven by a deep curiosity about how things work and a passion for resolving disparities that affect humanity. My intentions in Medical Science, particularly
Neuroscience will not only contribute to diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of persons physically, but will, by extend, revolutionize the work we do as scientists, how we study the biology of the world, how we conduct research in the areas that matter most to us and our understanding of ourselves as people. Even though I know the journey will be tedious, I believe the fulfillment of achieving my aspirations surpasses all relentless hardships ahead. The life I imagine for myself is one of importance and undeniable value, one that can only be attained through determination, perseverance and great faith.
