Our Family is in Urgent Need of Safe Housing and Mold Removal
Hello friends, family, and kind neighbors, We are reaching out to you today during a very scary and unexpected emergency. Our family home has just been discovered to have severe, dangerous mold contamination and major water damage. Because of this, it is completely unsafe for us to be inside. We had absolutely no clue anything was wrong until just one week ago, when the garage ceiling spackle suddenly started falling down onto my car. What we thought was a small issue turned out to be a massive crisis.The damage to our home is widespread, and the source of the water is a complete mystery. We have already brought out roofing specialists and window professionals, and both have confirmed the leak is not coming from the roof or the windows. We won’t know where the water is coming from or how bad the damage truly is until professionals open up the structure.Right now, inside our master bedroom, the wall is physically soft and squishy to the touch from severe water rot. Toxic mold is trapped deep inside these walls and underneath the exterior siding on the front of our home, and it has even begun showing through to the outside bedroom wall. Additionally, the garage ceiling has noticeable water damage, with the paint and spackle peeling and falling off.To make matters worse, my husband suffers from severe asthma. Breathing in these invasive spores is a direct threat to his life and health. Doctors and specialists have made it absolutely clear: my husband, our three children (ages 7, 12, and 14), our 2-year-old dog Creed, and I must stay completely out of the house until the siding, bedroom walls, and garage ceiling are safely investigated, treated, and fully rebuilt.Right now, we are entirely displaced. We have nowhere to go, no savings left, and we have already completely exhausted all of our home equity options on previous home repairs before finding out about this mold. To make things harder, our homeowner's insurance will not cover any of the costs for this remediation.Furthermore, we have exhausted every local resource:211 has no emergency housing vouchers available.We do not qualify for Omaha city grants because we live just outside city limits.We do not qualify for rural grants because we are too close to the city and our income is over $50,000.Because we fall right through the cracks of financial, government, and nonprofit aid, we are completely stranded. This fundraiser is our absolute last resort to keep our family safe.We are trying to raise $20,000 to help cover:Emergency shelter: Short-term hotel stays or a temporary safe rental so our three kids and Creed have a roof over their heads.Professional leak detection and structural remediation: Hiring experts to find the mystery leak, safely tearing off the front siding, cutting out the rotting master bedroom walls, fixing the water damage in the garage ceiling, treating the toxic mold, and rebuilding our home so it is healthy enough for my husband's lungs.Basic essentials: Replacing clothes, bedding, or items we cannot safely bring out of the toxic environment.Every single dollar helps us get closer to a safe, dry, and healthy place to live.
