Asking for help is incredibly difficult for me, but right now I have to put my pride aside for my son. My son has Level 3 autism and needs approximately $2,700 in dental work that we have been trying to get completed since January. Because of his autism and sensory needs, a typical dental appointment is not an option for him. He cannot tolerate the gas or remain still long enough to safely complete the work, so his dental treatment has to be performed under general anesthesia in a surgery center or hospital.
Unfortunately, we have continued to run into obstacle after obstacle. He has had Medicaid, but ongoing issues with his SSI have repeatedly affected his insurance coverage and made it extremely difficult to find a provider who can accommodate his needs. After months of waiting and trying to navigate the system, we have now lost his Medicaid coverage, and I have added him to my dental insurance. Even with my insurance, however, the cost of getting his dental work completed under anesthesia is approximately $2,700 out of pocket.
At this point, continuing to wait isn’t something I feel comfortable doing. He needs this dental work, and untreated dental problems can lead to infections, pain, and more serious health complications. Because my son has limited communication, I also don’t want to wait until he is in significant pain before we’re finally able to get him the care he needs.
I’ve always tried to be the person who helps others when I can, which makes being the person asking for help now incredibly humbling. But I’m at a loss, and my son’s health has to come before my pride. Any donation, no matter the amount, will go directly toward getting his dental procedure completed safely.
