The hospital room was silent except for my heart beating faster and faster with every waking minute. I sat there for what felt like an eternity waiting for the next gut-wrenching sentence the doctor was going to say. I could feel my mother's fear from across the room, and my father start to squeeze my hand. I was rattled to my core as my stomach started to turn, and my hands began to sweat. For a moment, I felt paralyzed by a sudden pang in my chest. After numerous MRI scans, a back brace for four years, and specialists saying they didn’t know what was wrong with me, I finally got my answer. My father asked the doctor to repeat my diagnosis... He repeated “she has a ChariMalformation Type 1 and will need brain surgery to hopefully fix the rapid curve in her spine…”
Chiari Malformation Type 1 (CM1) is a condition in which the lower part of the brain (cerebellum) sits too low and pushes into the space where the spinal cord starts. In my case, the spinal fluid was causing my spinal cord to curve significantly. I was neither prepared nor excited to hear. I thought I was either going to die or be in a lot of pain for the rest of my life. I was terrified... This was a pivotal moment in my life because of the psychological impact and the need to shift my overall perspective. My mental health was greatly impacted because of the uncertainty of my future. I didn't know how to cope with the information that was given to me. It shifted how I viewed life.
During my recovery, I faced many challenges, including mental health, academics, and just figuring out how to get back to my usual self. Some of the hardships included memory and processing difficulties while adjusting to the rigor of school. The relentless vomiting, desperate clutch of ice packs against my pounding head, and the struggle to the bathroom marked one of the lowest points of my life. Not only did I overcome these challenges, but I also became a stronger and better person. It was one of the hardest points of my life. I kept moving and made the conscious decision to stay positive. I chose a path of self-discovery, mindset shift, a sense of community, and goal setting. I made jokes, I laughed, and I encouraged myself... I made the choice to change who I am, indefinitely. If it weren't for this experience, I would not be the person I am today.
Even on the hardest days, when the pain felt endless, and progress seemed impossible, I held onto something that gave me hope, my dream of going to Japan. It became more than just a place on a map; it was a symbol of everything I was fighting for. I imagined myself walking beneath cherryblossoms trees, embracing a world I had only ever seen on TikTok. That dream grounded me during my recovery. It reminded me that my story didn't end in the hospital room or my bed. It reminded me that I could live my life outside of my dreams. It was only the beginning. Now, as I continue to rebuild my life, this dream still means everything to me. It represents resilience, healing, and the promise of a future I once feared I wouldn't have. Supporting my GoFundMe means helping me take a step toward that future. A future I worked tirelessly to believe in, even when it felt out of reach. Thank you for having the time to read my story and for any support you’re able to give. It truly means more to me than I can express
