Help My Mom Find A Safe Place To Live
My 68-year-old mother is asking for help after a series of events left her financially devastated and too afraid to remain in the place she calls home.
She survives on Social Security and SSI and rents a room in a shared house in Alexandria. Over the past two months, nearly all of the money she depends on to live has been taken from her account.
The first incident happened after a roommate offered to pick up groceries for her. When the roommate returned, my mother was told that her debit card had gone missing. She later discovered that her account had been emptied of the thousands she had managed to save, through ATM withdrawals. A police report was filed.
The following month, the mother of that roommate, who also lives in the home, offered to buy groceries for her. This time her debit card was returned, but she later found that a $500 ATM withdrawal had been made at the same store. This incident was also reported to law enforcement.
Without those funds, she lost the savings she needed to move somewhere safer and closer to me here in Leesburg.
Since reporting these incidents, she has become increasingly afraid to remain in the house. She worries about possible retaliation and feels especially vulnerable because she has no way to secure the room she rents.
Her bedroom door has no lock, and people regularly enter her room without her permission. There have even been times when someone has walked in while she was changing clothes, and she often finds that items have gone missing from her room.
The atmosphere in the home has also become increasingly hostile. She has been screamed at and intimidated, and the stress has become overwhelming. She tells us she is afraid to fall asleep because she doesn't know if someone will come into her room while she is sleeping. Every day she remains there, she feels trapped between fear for her safety and the reality that she cannot afford to leave.
We are raising money to help her relocate as quickly as possible. Every donation will go toward a security deposit and first month's rent for a room closer to Leesburg.
My goal is to give my mom a place where she can lock her door, sleep peacefully, and live without fear.
