AFSCME Local 1110, the Union representing the building service, groundskeeping, and dining service workers at Illinois State University, went on strike April 8th for a fair contract! Not only is ISU refusing to negotiate a fair contract, but they have also started to hire strikebreakers to fill in for the essential work these employees do. AFSCME workers have not received a raise in two years, and are some of the lowest paid workers on campus.

The ISU Labor Coalition represents unions on campus coming together in support of each other, including United Faculty of ISU-UPI Local 4100, Illinois State University Education Association, AFSCME Local 1110, AFSCME Local 3236, SEIU Local 73 Graduate Workers Union, Lab School Education Association, and the ISU Student Support Professionals chapter of UPI Local 4100.

We are coming together to gather donations for ASFCME Local 1110 to support their strike funds. All donations collected will be sent directly to the Local. For individuals who want to send their own donation directly, checks can be made out to “AFSCME Local 1110” and mailed to Jon Fears, 103 E Douglas, P.O. Box 241, Carlock, IL 61725

Some dinner sandwiches delivered to the second shift of workers of AFSCME Local 1110 picketing tonight, from the generous donation on behalf of AFSCME Local 51!

The UFISU is also requesting an AFSCME Local 1110 solidarity action! After 8 days on the line ISU admin still aren't budging and have hired four different companies to scab their BSW and Dining labor.

Local 1110 workers are asking for supportive pressure on VP Glen Nelson*.

Script below, but if you have a personal connection to ISU please say so.  Please be polite to the clerical worker on the other end.

Script:

Dr. Nelson,

It's unacceptable that the ISU admin still haven't gotten to agreement with AFSCME Local 1110.  It’s inaccurate to say that admin wants to “continue efforts to resolve the remaining issues in bargaining” but then bring no proposals to the table and reject the compromise offered by AFSCME. It's despicable that ISU has outsourced their work.  ISU is not broke. Tell Angie Doolin to bring something new to the table to get the job done and AFSCME workers back inside where they want to be.  ISU students, ISU Employees, and the whole Redbird community deserves better and ISU Administration can do better right now.

*Nelson is the priority target, but if you feel inspired and have capacity to call / email the other administrators at ISU (e.g. President Tarhule) it can only help.
