My name is Sahana Chibber, and I am turning 12 on August 20th. As you may know, South Maui, Lahaina, and Upcountry Maui experienced devastating wildfires in early August. My heart is aching for all the families who have lost their homes, for the sacred land that has been destroyed, and all the historic landmarks that have burned down. Maui is very special to me, full of family memories, and volunteering with native Hawaiians to restore the land. After being in Maui less than a week ago and connecting with these families, seeing pictures of how it looks now is heartbreaking. For a few days I felt really sad, like a big part of me was lost. Though the fires are out of our control, there are still some things we can do to help support people in Maui, and the sacred land of Maui itself. So, I hope that for my birthday, you will help me reach my goal to support Maui!
