Many of you know that I’ve been a social worker for over 10 years, always doing my best to find creative ways to assist those in need. However, I’ve encountered a situation that I can’t solve on my own, and I’m reaching out for help. I’ve known this elder for several years, and it breaks my heart to see her struggling. She’s had so many challenges, and I want to show her that the community can come together to lift her up.
This woman was involved in a terrible accident that wasn’t her fault. A drunk driver hit her, and she had to be rescued by the jaws of life. Thankfully, she is recovering, but it has been a long, painful journey of months of physical therapy and recovery. Unfortunately, her car was totaled in the accident, and due to her injuries, she lost her job. This compounded the difficulty of paying medical bills and managing household expenses. Since this incident she just hasn’t been able to bounce back financially and is on the edge of losing everything.
She is working again, but only part-time, as standing for long periods of time still causes significant pain. Despite this, she walks to work, no matter the weather—rain, sleet, or snow. She lives alone and doesn’t have any family or friends nearby who can offer much help. I’ve been doing what I can, offering rides to pick up medications and groceries, but I want to do more to support her.
So, I’m stepping out of my comfort zone and reaching out to you for help. My goal is to surprise this incredible woman with the love and support she has so desperately needed and deserves. She has no idea I’m doing this, and if she knew, she would likely tell me she’s fine and doesn’t need any assistance. That’s why I want to surprise her with this outpouring of support from those who can help.
