Help Sherry Heal: A Double Transplant Miracle and the Long Road Home
Some stories change you forever. This is one of them!
If you've ever met Sherry, chances are she's touched your life in some way. Maybe she offered a listening ear when you were struggling. Maybe she opened her home, shared a meal, rescued an animal, or showed up when no one else would. As a retired nurse, she has spent her entire life taking care of others, loving fiercely, giving generously, and carrying people through their darkest moments. Sherry is the person who shows up when someone is hurting. Alongside her husband, Mike, they have spent years of pouring kindness, generosity, and compassion into the lives of countless people and 4-legged companions.
They have always been the ones helping others…now they need our help!
This is the why and the why happened fast…
· July 6, 2026 - Sherry was not feeling well so she and Mike decided to go to the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) ER so that Sherry could be checked out, have her pacemaker evaluated, and possibly get some IV diuretics. Instead, she was admitted right away, and doctors immediately began running tests. Sherry has heart failure, and while she was in the hospital, her kidneys began to fail due to fluid overload. She was placed on 24/7 kidney dialysis and within days, she was fighting for her life.
· July 8, 2026 - Sherry and Mike learned she would need an organ transplant. Sherry would not survive without a transplant, but not one transplant… TWO ... TWO TRANSPLANTS! She would need a new heart AND a new kidney.
· What followed was a battle few people could ever imagine. Over the following weeks, Sherry endured tests, biopsies, procedures, scans, evaluations, and constant medical interventions as doctors worked to determine whether she could even qualify for the transplants. Because her blood pressure was dangerously unstable, many procedures had to be performed with little or no sedation. Yet, Sherry kept fighting. Through every difficult step, Mike was by her side. In his words, his “Beautiful Warrior Princess” was showing incredible strength, courage, and grace. He watched the woman he loves undergo impossible odds with courage that left doctors, nurses, family, and friends in awe. Together they held onto hope. Even when hope felt impossibly fragile.
· August 2, 2026 - Sherry was officially placed on the heart and kidney transplant list. Doctors made it very clear that it was going to take a lot of luck to find the “right match” for both organs.
· August 7, 2026 – THE MIRACLE ARRIVED! Just 5-days later, a heart and kidney were matched perfectly to Sherry!
· August 9, 2026 - Sherry received the greatest gift… A HEART! She underwent heart transplant surgery that day.
· August 10, 2026 - The very next day, she returned to the operating room for another major surgery and received yet another gift… A KIDNEY! These lifesaving gifts have given Sherry and Mike hope for the future they have dreamed of together.
Because of this unimaginable generosity of a donor family, Sherry was given something priceless:
More time.
More birthdays.
More Moons.
More Christmas mornings.
More laughter with family.
More memories with the people she loves.
More life.
A FUTURE!
While one family's moment of profound loss became another family's miracle, their incredible gift gave Sherry a second chance that words can scarcely describe.
But This Journey Isn't Over
As of August 20, 2026 - Sherry has been moved out of ICU and back to the cardiac wing of the hospital. If the next few days continue to go well, she may be discharged soon… but her recovery is far from over. It's only the beginning…
For at least the next 3-months - Sherry must remain within 10 minutes of the hospital in a nearby recovery care unit. This will allow her to stay close to her transplant team so that doctors can closely monitor her new heart and kidney, adjust medications, and watch for any signs of complications, while she continues healing and receiving follow-up care.
While Sherry focuses on recovery, Mike is carrying an enormous responsibility. Not only is he caring for his recovering wife, but he must also continue to make regular two-hour trips (1-way) home to care for the family waiting there… their teenage grandson, whom they are proudly raising as legal guardians, their beloved dogs, and the cherished cats. The financial burden is quickly adding up…unexpected costs that come with a transplant journey no family can truly prepare for.
