The recent anhydrous ammonia spill in Teutopolis, Illinois was a devastating incident that has resulted in the tragic loss of five lives, including a father and his two young children, and has led to multiple hospitalizations. The spill occurred after a semi-truck carrying around 7,500 gallons of the toxic substance crashed, releasing an estimated 4,000 gallons. Brave and dutyful first responders were quickly on the scene and exposed prior to hazmat arriving. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the accident, which forced the evacuation of 500 people within a 1-mile radius. There are thousands of people who did not evacuate and due to winds during the spill, exposure to this toxic gas spread.
Anhydrous ammonia poses significant health risks, including tissue dehydration, caustic burns, severe lung damage, and death, making immediate intervention crucial for the well-being of the affected community and to mitigate the long-term health impacts.
By unplanned-happenstance, local Effingham resident, Jonathan Kabbes, PhD(c), LCPC has a LightMD device which he has been using day and night to help his family, first responders, and local residents of the affected community.
