Poor Teddy! As if this kid doesn’t have enough to deal with in his short little life— what with his severe skin allergies, herpes virus flair-ups, and chronic severe IBD—he’s now very ill on top of all that.
Ted was admitted into the vetrinary ICU on Friday the 6th of February after showing signs of pain, weakness, lethargy, and he stopped eating and drinking. Thinking it was another viral flair-up (he had a pretty bad one of those about a year ago), we initially put him on antivirals and started hydration. A day later and poor Ted became jaundiced, indicating a far more serious problem.
After hospitalization and several rounds of imaging and blood tests, it’s been determined to not be a viral issue at all and instead, his little liver is severely inflamed and choking off his bile duct which in tern, dumped a bunch of bile into his system. He also has non-generative anemia. Poor kitty is a MESS.
After spending the weekend in the emergency vet ICU, Ted has now been transferred over to his internal medicine specialists at OVRA. They will be continuing to stabilize him and work on finding the source for his liver disfunction. The working theory is: his chronic IBD caused an infection, which led to his liver going haywire and the cascade failure in his system followed.
He’s on two different antibiotics at this time, along with medications for pain and a light sedative because he gets hyperactive and manic on pain meds and we don’t want him to hurt himself (little stoner lol). He’s being monitored around the clock and upon retesting, his liver values have started to come down, thank the gods.
The cost of all this has been astronomical. We are selling my car to help but it’s not a new or nice car so that can only go so far. We are asking for help with the emergency vet bill we’ve paid for his weekend of care. While we don’t have any idea what the specialist bill is going to look like, we are bracing ourselves for a pretty significant hit there too and we’ll update our fund number as it comes in.
