My name is Carla Fletcher, and I’m raising funds to relocate and recover after toxic mold exposure nearly destroyed my family.
In November 2024, I moved into Heatherwood Apartments in Inkster, Michigan with my disabled father. We paid full market rent, no Section 8. I was his caregiver and signed the lease with him.
In February 2025, my father was rushed to the hospital. He developed life-threatening sepsis from ESBL E. coli. He had two amputations on the same toe, and has never recovered. He is now permanently disabled and has been displaced from that home ever since.
Around the same time, I started experiencing serious health issues, psychiatric symptoms, brain fog, and memory loss. My baby became developmentally delayed. We didn’t know what was wrong, until we got the lab results.
In May 2025, a certified mold inspection revealed:
• 147,000 airborne spores in the bedroom (normal is 500–1,000)
• Mold spreading through the HVAC system
• Mushrooms and visible contamination in walls and baseboards
Instead of fixing it, the property retaliated. They threatened us. Then they filed for eviction. Now we’re sick, displaced, and trying to fight this while still in danger.
We’ve retained legal counsel. But the damage is done. My dad is still displaced. I’m on federal medical leave. My fiancé has heart complications. My toddler is still struggling.
Every dollar will go toward emergency relocation, recovery, and protection. We are not exaggerating, we are surviving.
